Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center’s 73rd Annual State Livestock & Poultry Show is to return on March 3-6, 2016 at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena, Hwy. 61 North, in Baton Rouge, LA.

Since 1943, Southern University has continued the tradition of providing an opportunity for youth throughout the state to gain valuable knowledge and skills at the Annual State Livestock and Poultry Show. It is the premiere event for youth to showcase their animals. This event is for educational purposes that teaches the youth: entrepreneurship skills, character development and leadership training.

This exhibition has become a vital source to provide youth with the valuable experience needed to pursue career goals.

The show features animals that have either won or were showcased in parish competitions. During the two-day event, judges will name the state champions of the show in the various breeds of cattle, hogs, sheep, lamb and goats. Winners will receive premiums, ribbons, rosettes, and silver platters.

More than 500 young farmers, some as young as seven years old, participated in the previous year’s event with animals nearly twice their weight. Thirty-four were named state champions of dairy animals, goats, beef bearing animals, hogs, lamb and steer competitions. More than 200 animals were auctioned and by the end of the show, 800 people showed up to support the youth.

Individuals are welcome to purchase non-processed choice meats from various livestock. All proceeds from meat sales go directly to participating youth as a reward for their hard work and financial investment. The following meat choices and quantities are now available for pre-order:

  • ·         One whole beef $2,000
  • ·         One half beef $1,000
  • ·         One-fourth beef $500
  • ·         One whole pork $225
  • ·         One whole lamb $200
  • ·         One whole goat is $175

There is also a processing fee that is included in the original cost. Purchases must be paid by money orders or check only, prior to picking up the meat and made payable to the Southern University Ag Center Livestock Show.

Those who don’t pre-order their meat are invited to do so during the show’s ‘Junior Auction Sale’ on Saturday, March 5 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena.

The office will deliver the meat to two locations either the Cutrer Slaughter House in Kentwood (985)-229-2478 or Rouchers in Plaquemine (225)-687-4258.

Southern University System employees can purchase their meat through the livestock show office’s payroll deduction form.
