SU Ag Center set to host a virtual seminar series to help youth transition back to school

Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Ag Center will host a seminar series to aid youth and young adults who are directly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic through its Giving Youth Healthy Options that Promote Excellence (H.O.P.E.) 4-H Program.

The seminars will provide high school students and recent high school graduates with social and cognitive support through interactive sessions as they transition from the effects of COVID-19 through their return to high school or college.

All sessions will be held on Zoom from 12 p.m. – 12:45 p.m. on the topics of:

·       Dealing with the Disappointment – June 25, 2020

·       Preparing For My Tomorrow: What’s Next for Me? – July 9, 2020

·       Vision Board Party - July 12, 2020

·       Social Distancing and Teens – August 8, 2020

·       I Made It – September 5, 2020

“The SU Ag Center is holding this seminar series because we recognize the challenges that our young people are facing are uniquely theirs,” said Dr. Tiffany Franklin, Associate Youth Specialist and Program Leader of 4-H Youth Development at the SU Ag Center. “In consideration of the disruption of the academic setting, socialization, financial stability,  physical and mental well-being, we desire to provide engaging sessions, coupled with coping skills to ease their transition through this new normalcy,” add Dr. Franklin.

Chalonda Hollis, a licensed clinical social worker, will lead the seminars along with Dr. Franklin. Hollis is a Board Approved Clinical Supervisor and a Certified-School Social Work Specialist who provides clinical supervision for master level social workers seeking clinical licensure. She has 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults. She has worked to help individuals with behavioral disorders, anxiety, depression, school-related issues, childhood disorders, anger management, and emotional distress. She has also worked with victims of abuse and neglect, at-risk youth, and Employee Assistance Program matters.

SU Ag Center set to discuss Emergency Preparedness for Kids during Facebook Live

Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Ag Center will host the second session of its Facebook Live Series on Emergency Preparedness in the Wake of COVID-19 at 12 p.m. on June 19.

The live stream will focus on the topic of “Emergency Preparedness for Children.”

“Children are especially vulnerable before, during and after emergencies,” said Krystle Allen, SU Ag Center Extension Associate and Facebook Live Series host. “Learning critical skills on how to plan and respond after an emergency, fosters a sense of understanding and equips children to respond quickly and safely during emergency situations,” added Allen.
The broadcast will last between 15-30 minutes, depending on questions.

The Emergency Preparedness Facebook Live Series will be held biweekly on Fridays at 12 p.m. on the Southern University Ag Center’s Facebook page.

SU Ag Center set to host Nutrition and Health Series on Facebook Live




Facebook Live Series to provide helpful tutorials for adults, teens and kids



Baton Rouge, La. – The Nutrition, Health and Wellness Department of the Southern University Ag Center will conduct a Facebook Live Series with Nutrition Education and Physical Activity lessons through its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP).
The live streams will be held June 17 – July 8 at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on the SUAg SNAP-Ed’s Facebook page.
The topics covered during the series will include:
·       Incorporating Exercise Into Your Daily Schedule
·       Healthy Snacks for Children During the Summer
·       Container Gardening
·       Eating Healthy on a Budget
·       Preserving and Canning
·       Food Safety
·       Physical Activity
·       Spicing up your Family Dinners
“The SU Ag Center's SNAP-Ed and EFNEP programs believe that positive behavior changes, inclusive of diet and physical activity are paramount when it comes to living our best most healthy lives,” said Dr. De’Shoin York, Associate Vice Chancellor for Extension and Outreach and Program Leader for the Center’s Department of Nutrition, Health & Wellness. “This series will give our participants some practical tools to assist them on their journey to live their best lives,” she added.
SNAP-Ed is the nutrition promotion and obesity prevention component of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the U.S. domestic hunger safety net formerly known as Food Stamps that provides economic benefits to eligible, low-income individuals and families for food purchases.  The program teaches people using or eligible for SNAP about proper nutrition and how to make their food dollars stretch further. SNAP-Ed participants also learn to be physically active.
The SU Ag Center’s SNAP-Ed program has been in existence for more than 20 years and operates in 13 parishes throughout the state of Louisiana: Ascension, Avoyelles, Calcasieu, East Baton Rouge, East Carroll, East Feliciana, Evangeline, Jefferson Davis, Madison, Morehouse, St. James, Richland, and West Carroll.
EFNEP is designed to assist limited-resource adults and youth in acquiring the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behavioral changes necessary for nutritionally sound diets.  EFNEP Programming is currently available in Avoyelles, Evangeline, and Rapides parishes.

SU Ag Center set to co-sponsor virtual outstanding mature girlz conference



The annual conference aims to empower girls and teens



 Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Ag Center will co-sponsor the 2020 virtual Outstanding Mature Girlz (O.M.G.) Conference along with the Outstanding Mature Girlz Organizations. The online event will be held Friday, June 12 at 2 p.m.



The annual conference empowers, educates, and celebrates the young females from Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. The event is free and open to girls ages 10 - 19.



Disney Super Star Kylie Cantrall of “Gabby Duran & The Unsittables” will be a featured speaker for the event.

SU Ag Center prepares for its 78th Annual State Livestock Show



Baton Rouge, La. – As the Southern University Ag Center prepares for its 78th annual State Livestock and Poultry Show, the health and safety of our show’s participants is important.  



In an effort to keep exhibitors informed with up-to-date information about the 2021 show, the SU Ag Center’s Livestock Show Office has released the following statement:



Due to COVID-19 health concerns, the Southern University Ag Center can not guarantee that the 2021 Livestock and Poultry Show will occur as advertised. All livestock show participants and their families should be aware that the purchase and/or validation of animals for the 2021 livestock show is at their own risk and financial investment.



“The safety and wellbeing of our Livestock Show participants and families is a priority for the Southern University Ag Center,” said Dr. Harold Mellieon, Livestock Show Director. “We have released this statement to ensure that our participants are aware of our plans for the upcoming show,” he added.



Updates regarding the Ag Center’s 78th  Annual Livestock Show will be available on the Southern University Ag Center’s website.

SU Ag Center set to host Facebook Live Series on Emergency Preparedness

Baton Rouge, La. – The Southern University Ag Center will host a Facebook Live Series on Emergency Preparedness in the Wake of COVID-19 beginning June 5 at 12 p.m.



The event will be the first of several biweekly live streams. The June 5 stream will cover the topic of “Resources available for Emergency Preparedness!”



The broadcasts will last between 15-30 minutes, depending on questions.
