Baton Rouge, La. – Twenty-five participants from 15 states
received certificates of completion during the Southern University Ag Center’s Produce
Safety Alliance Train-the-Trainer Certification Workshop.
The two-day workshop, which
was held September 11 and 12 at the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and
Forestry in Baton Rouge, provided produce safety trainers with the
certification needed to conduct trainings for farmers who are governed by the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Produce Safety Rule.
This rule sets standards
for growing, harvesting, packing and storing fruits and vegetables to prevent
foodborne illness. It addresses water quality, composting, farm personnel
health and hygiene and equipment sanitation among other issues.
Kristin Woods, Produce
Safety Alliance Southeast Regional Extension Associate in Alabama; Donna Pahl
Clements, Produce Safety Alliance Extension Associate for the Midwest Regional of Riverside, CA; and Dr.
Alejandro Castillo, Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Science at
Texas A&M University served as presenters for the workshop.
Dr. Fatemeh Malekian,
Professor of Food Science and Nutrition at the SU Ag Center, is the project
director of the Ag Center’s Produce Safety Alliance Grower’s Certification Program.
