Making Locally Grown Food More Available: Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food

The compass
Baton Rouge, LA – On Feb 29 the USDA introduced The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass.

Are you a farmer, rancher or food business entrepreneur interested in local and regionally-produced food? Are you a community leader wondering how local and regional food systems can help your local economy? Are you a consumer interested in learning more about where your food comes from? Now you can.

You can learn more about USDA’s support of local and regional food through the new Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass. The Compass is an online multi-media narrative with stories, pictures and video about USDA’s support for local and regional food systems and an interactive map of USDA-supported local and regional food activities in all 50 states. With the Compass, you can navigate USDA resources for local and regional food; meet farmers, ranchers, businesses and communities in your state that are participating in local food chains; and learn about local and regional food projects across the country.

The Initiative was launched in 2009 to coordinate the work of USDA’s 17 agencies and many staff offices that invest in local and regional food systems. Since then, USDA has supported nearly 4,500 seasonal high tunnels (or “hoop houses”) to help farmers extend their growing seasons.

The Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Compass is a valuable resource documenting the innovation, entrepreneurship and impact of local food systems across the country. It is driving job growth, keeping farmers on the land, and keeping wealth in rural communities.

Dive deep into this new tool, and be inspired by the stories it tells and the ideas it can spur for you and your community.

Meeting for Black Farmer Claimants in Pigford 2 Lawsuit in Louisiana

Please see attached press release.

Workshop on Understanding the Lawsuit and the Claim Form in the Black Farmer Class Action Lawsuit Against the USDA

On Saturday, March 17, 2012 a workshop on the Pigford 2 lawsuit will be held at the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center’s, Louisiana Small Farmer Conference at the Felton G. Clark Activity Center (Mini‐Dome) on the campus of Southern University. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

It has taken 20 years to provide the opportunity for thousands of farmers who were discriminated by the USDA to have some relief if they prevail in the lawsuit. “Our intent is to provide as much detailed information as possible to assist farmers with the claims process,” said John Zippert with the Federation of Southern Cooperatives. There is considerable misinformation circulating around the South about the lawsuit, such as assumptions that it is still possible to sign up for the lawsuit in 2012. The fact is, to be in the lawsuit, individuals had to have filed a petition between October 13, 1999 and July 18, 2008 when the Farm Bill passed Congress.

The workshop will offer claimants information about who qualifies in the lawsuit and about the claims process itself. Those attending will be informed about the claim form and to better understand what is needed to provide a narrative about the discrimination they experienced at USDA.

Farmers are encouraged to attend the meeting on March 17 so they can be as informed as possible before they meet with class counsel.

There are many meetings scheduled with class counsel in the South. Please call EPIQ at 877-810-8110 if you have questions about being in the lawsuit and to make an appointment with an attorney. (EPIQ is the administrator in the Pigford 2 lawsuit.)

There is no right of appeal, thus no room for error in filling out the claim form. Farmers are encouraged to bring the persons helping them with their claims to the workshop.

Timbuktu Academy Emerges Champion of Black History Quiz Bowl

Baton Rouge, LA – Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center hosted the 18th Annual Black History Quiz Bowl, February 23 at A. O. Williams Hall. This year, the Timbuktu Academy team took first place in the nine-team competition. Last year, Capitol High School took home the prize.

SU Ag Center and the College of Agricultural, Family and Consumer Sciences jointly organize the event involving stiff competition among high school and college students under the leadership of Dr. Owusu Bandele, professor emeritus, horticulture.

“It was a great competition; it is all in the preparation,” said an elated Bandele at the end of several rounds of contests.

When asked why it was important to hold such competition, Paula Mensah of the Timbuktu Academy responded that preparing for events like this gives the younger generation an opportunity to learn and remember great African Americans who paved the way for them.

Team Coach Sharon Nash concurred with Mensah stating, “It is very important for students to learn about their heritage so they are not living a crippled life. It helps them to know who they are, and that they can excel in life.”

USDA Offers Mobile Access and More Efficient Online Tools for Farmers and Ranchers

Baton Rouge, LA— Farmers and Ranchers now have a more efficient and timely option for receiving important Farm Service Agency (FSA) program eligibility requirements, deadlines and related information. USDA/FSA is now offering free online communications through GovDelivery electronic news service.

Acting Under Secretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Michael Scuse announced on Feb. 10, a package of technology enhancements from the Farm Service Agency that includes Web access for handheld and smartphone users, as well as a more efficient and timely option for receiving news and critical program information. The technology improvements will allow users of FSA information to gain access to easy-to-read data, including key features such as loan deficiency payment (LDP) rates, posted county prices (PCP), FSA news releases and AskFSA, the agency’s online self-help knowledge base.

The mobile site organizes the information on the website in a way that makes for easy reading on a small, hand-held screen. It does not require screen adjustments or constant scrolling and panning across the information.

In addition to the mobile website, FSA is now offering farmers and ranchers a more efficient and timely option for receiving critical program information. Such things as eligibility requirements, deadlines and related information can be accessed through an electronic news service hosted by GovDelivery.

Her duties include collecting research / review articles, evaluating and submitting them for publication. Accepted articles will be available at the Science Publications web site for unlimited data download, without any compulsory membership. Additionally, the team expects proposals for special issues and ideas from Marshall related to the journal.

Other current Board members come from diverse countries including Australia, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Slovenia, and United Arab Emirate.

Pigford Settlement Claims Filing Period Opens for Farmers and Ranchers

Baton Rouge, LA - Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently reminded African American farmers and ranchers that the period to file a claim in the Pigford II settlement has opened, and eligible candidates must file claims no later than May 11, 2012.

"With the opening of the claims process, African American farmers and ranchers who believe they are entitled to compensation under the Pigford II settlement must file a claim within 180 days in order to receive cash payment or loan forgiveness," said Secretary Vilsack. "The opening of this claims process marks another milestone in USDA's efforts to correct the wrongs of the past and ensure fair treatment to all current and future customers."

In February, USDA and Department of Justice announced an agreement with African American farmers to settle the Pigford II litigation for $1.25 billion. Congress passed the Claims Resolution Act of 2010 that funded the settlement in November 2010, and the bill was signed by President Obama in December 2010.

The settlement arises from a class action lawsuit against USDA that alleges the Department discriminated against African-Americans who applied for or attempted to apply for farm loans or other farm benefits between January 1, 1981 and December 31, 1996. The settlement applies only to African-American farmers who meet specific eligibility requirements, including the requirement that they previously submitted a request to file a late claim in the 1999 Pigford I class action Consent Decree.

The filing period opened November 14, 2011, and continues for 180 days, until May 11, 2012.

Claimant services representatives can also be reached through calling 1-877-810-8110 or 1-866-950-5547. Claimants must register for a claims package (by calling the number or visiting the website) and the claims package will be mailed to claimants. All those interested in learning more or receiving information about the claims process and claims packages are encouraged to attend a meeting and contact the website or claims telephone number.

The website is www.blackfarmercase.com

The call number is 1-877-810-8110 or 1-866-950-5547

Claims period: November 14, 2011 to May 11, 2012

Opelousas fights teen violence through summits

Baton Rouge, LA - Opelousas held its first Teen Summit on November 22 attracting a small cheering crowd .The the City of Opelousas sponsored the summit aimed at helping stop teen violence. The speakers ranged from former coach Raymond Duplechain to Dr. Aubrey Williams with Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives, a satellite entity of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center.

"I didn't know what to expect, but it was real. They gave them the Word, no ifs, ands or buts about it," said Elizabeth Dave, who brought her two teenage children to the summit, held in the teen center in South City Park.

Community activist Tyrone Glover, who organized the summit, said he and the other presenters hope to make this a regular event.

"We'd like to do this at least four times a year. We definitely want to help our youth and parents," Glover said.

The program was prompted by the death of a young man earlier this year who was killed in a knife fight with another teenager.

"There is too much violence going on. We need to start cleaning up the problem," Glover said.

During the program, Glover spoke of his own youth growing up in Opelousas, which saw him involved in many fights and drug dealing.

"I was part of the problem for a long time. Now I'm losing sleep trying to be part of the solution, but I can't do it alone. We need everyone to get involved," Glover told the assembled parents and teenagers.

Glover then introduced Lt. Donald Young, one of the Opelousas Police officers who helped get him off the street by arresting him.

"I'm a product of the streets from a single parent home," Young told the teens. "I know the streets are tough and peer pressure is running wild. We are losing a generation to crime and senseless violence."

While giving advice to the teens, Young also spoke to the parents, telling them the solution begins in the home. "It is all about keeping the lines of communication open," Young told the parents.

He also urged the teens to show respect to their parents. "They have been there."

Young then introduced former coach Raymond Duplechain, who Young said served as the father figure he did not have at home when he was growing up.

Duplechain's message was about choices. "If you want to change the results, you need to change yourself. Everything you do is a choice," Duplechain said.

Next, Dr. Aubrey Williams with the Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives spoke on the importance of respect and emphasized that the goal of the meeting was to help young people understand respect for themselves and others.

"Respect is the first step. If they don't have respect for others, they can't have respect for themselves," Williams said.

From this initial meeting, Williams said the group hopes to work with the Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives on a number of workshops to share lessons on leadership, character building and alternatives.

The Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives is a satellite entity of the Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center. For more information, contact the Southwest Center for Rural Initiatives at 943-2410.

The Opelousas Daily World covered the event. The article is available at: http://www.dailyworld.com/article/20111124/NEWS01/111240312/Summit-seeks-end-teen-violence
